Natural Hair Bleach Mask Recipe (Not Intended For Dark/Red Hair)

Natural Hair Bleach Mask With No Harmful Ingredients

Hello hairoholics,

today I wanted to share a recipe that will significantly lighten your hair over time with natural ingredients and without any unnatural chemicals. It is a great substitute to chemical salon treatments and it will strengthen your hair very well. If you are a light brunette, it may take a while for this mask to lighten your hair so don't be afraid. If you are going for an ombre look, apply the mask to the ends of your hair only. If you are already a blonde, you can use this mask to refresh your color and add bright highlights. If you are a dark brown/red head/black haired gal, steer clear of this mask unless you want orange hair!

The ingredients needed for this mask are probably already in your kitchen pantry. Honey and lemon naturally contain traces of peroxide, chamomile is an herb that also has lightening properties. If you do not have the individual chamomile herb, tear up a chamomile tea bag and take out the herb inside. Bananas and Greek yoghurt are known to nourish hair, make sure to use plain Greek yoghurt. Let's get started!

Ingredients:

1-2 cups plain Greek yoghurt as the base of the mask (depending on your hair length)
4-5 tbsp. of pure, natural honey (honey that comes from your local farm is best)
1 tbsp. dried chamomile herb
2 tbsp. of lemon juice
1-2 bananas (depending on your hair length)

Mix all of the ingredients into the base (Greek yoghurt) and apply onto your hair from lengths to roots. Sit under a dryer or better yet the Sun to warm the mask and let it penetrate your hair follicles,  wash it out after 2 hours. Do the mask twice a week for noticeably blonder, stronger hair.

How to: Repair Chemically Damaged Hair

Repairing Chemically Damaged Hair:

Summer is finally here! The new hair trends are out and brighter hair = sexier hair. Bleaching involves chemicals, and even though you get that blonde your hair may break and fall out. Repairing and waiting is the only way to regain hair health. This may seem impossible, but I know the secrets. Oil, Oil & Oil! Plus repairing shampoo + conditioners and daily masks. Make sure that every product you use on your hair is organic. Stay tuned for some tips and natural remedies + my own experiences with hair damage...

My Experience:

I love blonde! As a baby, I had black hair, later into my toddler years I became a sunny blonde. The blonde faded away quickly though at the age of eight and I became a dark chestnut brunette. As I got older, I stared at old photographs and wanted the blonde back. After trying many home remedies, (such as smearing hot honey mixed in with camomile tea and lots of lemon juice onto my scalp) that had no effect on the color of my hair, I considered the salon as the only way of getting back to my blondish state. Instead of dyeing all of my hair, I only got thick natural highlights done for a  brighter look . This of course, involved chemicals and resulted in some damage, but since my hair was so healthy, it barely damaged it the first time around. The second time I got highlights, my hair turned orange and disgusting since it had been a while and my brown hair grew out. My hair remained undamaged. The third time was actually a few days ago, I had a dirty blonde look but I wanted to be ``brighter`` than before. Whilst being under the hair warmer, my hair began to sizzle underneath the foil. Imagine your hair literally sizzling, burning in chemicals under the foil. My hairdresser removed the foil and washed out my hair. The highlights were gorgeous and brighter than I had hoped, some almost platinum blonde. When I ran my fingers through my hair, horror had struck me. The platinum blonde pieces were falling out in clumps, and fast. My hairdresser didn`t charge me a lot for this highlighting job gone wrong, but I was pissed. The salon was empty and I was the only one there, and I was neglected during the job. Now I know I am never going back there again! The good news is that my hair is recovering a little bit, not a lot of hair fall out or breakage. Some tips that have helped me a lot is limiting brushing and washing, masking hair daily and oiling the breaking areas until the hair recovers. These tips, accompanied with gentleness and the right shampoo & conditioner help a lot!

Amazing Products That Have Helped Me:

I am an avid Organix fan! Their products are really worth the hype. Right now, to help heal my rough breaking hair, I am using their Keratin Oil line which helps limit hair loss and breaking whilst moisturizing rough hair.

Organix Anti-Breakage Keratin Oil Shampoo & Conditioner ($10.99 each CAN)

Remedies At Home:

Home remedies do in fact work to help heal your hair. Doing these remedies religiously (daily) until you see improvement in your hair is key.

Recipe 1: Egg & Mayo

These ingredients work to target dry and breaking areas.

Mix two eggs with a tbsp. of mayo into a bowl and apply to your scalp and lengths. Cover with a cap and wait for 1-2 hours before washing.

Recipe 2: Gelatin & Essential Oils Hair Mask

Gelatin is wonderful at strengthening breaking hair, essential oils soothe the scalp and help hair heal. Almond oil is a great moisturizer.

Use one pack of unflavored gelatin and mix it with some water and  2-5 drops of essential oils of your choice. I would recommend eucalyptus and lavender to soothe the scalp. Add 2 tbsp. of almond oil to the mix. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes. Apply it to your hair from the scalp to the ends. Leave in for a few hours.

Recipe 3: Healing Hair Oil

Hair oiling is a must for me, many people in India consider it sacred. Oil is really the heavenly grail for healthier hair. If you aren`t oiling your hair at least once a week, your hair isn`t receiving the nourishment it craves.

Use an oil of your choice, I recommend virgin olive oil or virgin coconut oil, but there are many and they are all amazing for hair. Mix the oil with some essential oils (4-5 drops each) and heat it in the microwave for a few seconds. The amount of oil you use is up to you, it all depends on your hair length. Apply the warmed oil to your scalp and massage your scalp. Make sure to knead the oil into your scalp, as if you are kneading dough. These movements help boost circulation to the scalp. Pull gently on your hair, and continue massaging your scalp. Finish the oiling by applying the remaining oil to your lengths and ends. Cover with a hot towel for 1-2 hours or overnight. Wash out with a mild shampoo.

Thanks so much for reading this post, I hope I have helped you deal with your hair woes! You are not alone :)

Make Your Own Hair Whips!

Hair Whips For Silky Hair

Hello again hairoholics!

Today I have a recipe for you, it is the ultimate hair treat and most of the ingredients are already in your pantry/kitchen cabinets. I recently discovered that coconut oil turns into a whipped cream texture when whipped , using this knowledge I created the ultimate hair treat. Additional olive oil and castor oil nourish hair and promote growth. Food colouring is also a great way to give your hair whip a neat colour, this is optional though. The great part about this recipe is that it can be customized according to your scent/colour preferences.

So get out your electric mixer/whisk and let's get whipping!

What you will need:

Olive oil
Coconut oil
Castor oil
Food colouring (optional)
Essential oils (your favourite scents)
Empty hair mask container or plain jar
Honey (because it is a natural preservative)
Electric Mixer/Whisk (I prefer the electric whip because it works on high speed)
Mixing bowl

Making the hair whip:

Start off by adding 1/2 a cup of coconut oil as your base, proceed adding 2tbsp of olive and castor oil. Mix all oils thoroughly in the bowl. Add 5-10 drops each of the essential oils of your choice (my favourite are lavender and eucalyptus), mix all the ingredients. Now take the whisk or electric whisk and start whipping! Quickly whip for 2-3 minutes, then add a tbsp. of honey and a few drops of food colouring and whisk again for 3-4 minutes. Pour the mask into a clean jar or empty hair mask container, the consistency should be fluffy and light.

How to use the hair whip:

The hair whip can be used in many ways according to your preference. It can be massaged into the scalp and spread across the hair, left in for 15 minutes and washed out. Or you can apply the whip and leave it on overnight for a deeeep treatment.

Give it as a gift:

I love making hair whips and treatments for friends/family. It may seem like a simple gift, but the results are miraculous. My sister, who has bleached and stressed hair, is currently using one of the hair whips that I made. It is very simple to make a hair whip treatment as a gift, just decorate the jar and customize the colour and scent of the whip.

Post a comment if you tried the recipe, I would love to hear about your results!

-xoxo Lexie

UPDATE! ---> A Natural Salon Brand Shampoo?

Update! ---> A Natural Salon Brand Shampoo?

Hello fellow hairoholics,

I wanted to publish an update on my previous post on the Nexxus Organic Shampoo/Conditioner combo. I did not end up purchasing them because of my travel to the U.S, and while there I purchased the Carol's Daughter Monoi Shampoo and Conditioner from ULTA instead because of the"hair strengthening" claims. These two are awesome and I am currently loving these two. They are a bit pricey, but they are worth it. My hair was soo soft and shiny after using them, my brush glided through my hair and made detangling a piece of cake. I would definitely recommend them.

Note: I have not yet tried their Monoi mask or serum/oil, maybe I will later on after I do some thorough research. Thanks for reading this post. Stay tuned for more hair product recommendations, updates and recipes :)

A Natural Salon Brand Shampoo?

Can A Salon Brand Shampoo & Conditioner Be Organic?

This is the most commonly asked question that I've been getting as of recently. The answer is yes partially. Organic can mean many things, having organically derived surfactants or containing organic essential oils, which most "organic" salon brands have. Organic has one distinctive meaning however. Organic means that it is 100% free of any chemicals or preservatives, this is where these salon brands are faulty. I will possibly be trying out a new shampoo and conditioner combo by Nexxus which is called "Botanoil Shampoo" & "Botanphuse Conditioner" and I will test out the results. These two are a little bit on the price-ier side, but I saw a sale on these in my local Shoppers Drug Mart so I will hopefully get a deal on these two.

I will keep you posted on the results!

-xoxo Alexis

I'm Back! Here is my 2013 haircare routine :)

Sorry I've Been Gone For So Long!

My intention was to take a break, well as it seems I've taken a rather long break. Well anyways I am back and I want to share my hair routine with all of you. It is a pretty simple routine, I am downsizing a bit on hair care products just so my scalp and hair aren't overloaded and my wallet isn't empty! :)

*Note* princes aren't listed because I live in Canada and most of these are Canadian products. Availability and prices vary depending in which country you live in.

Starting with shampoo and conditioner...

I think I have mentioned this pair before in another post, as you can see I am in love with them! They make my hair amazingly soft, shiny and thick looking. If you are willing to pay 2 dollars more than your usual shampoo on an all organic shampoo that delivers results, choose this one!

Live Clean Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner

Now I can share the ultimate hair treat...

I cannot get enough of Live Clean. Their exotic line is amazing! I have tried the Bali Oil mask but I found it a bit too heavy, this Argan Oil one is much better in terms of lightweight and very moisturizing. The mask is a staple in my hair care routine and I use it 2-3 times weekly.

Live Clean Argan Oil Conditioning Mask

Now, my favourite oil...

After all the argan oil talk you would probably guess that I use argan oil on my hair, well no. I love argan oil but recently I have found a new favourite! In a small health food store in Toronto I bought some organic Sea Buckthorn oil (500 mL) which was on sale for $10.00. I cannot show you specifically what the bottle looks like because it made by a very small company and they aren't featured on the internet :(

Instead I will show you the oil's appearance and tell you a little about it's benefits.

Sea Buckthorn oil is sometimes called the king of all oils. It is full of fatty acids and antioxidants that help heal rough and blemished skin or dry hair . The oil may be expensive just like argan oil, I buy it at Russian wholefood markets so I get a better discount on this stuff. Try looking in small healthcare stores for a bargain or invest in this liquid gold. The results are almost instant. Beware of staining though, the oil is very thick and orange in color!

To use: Just rub a few drops into your hands and apply onto hair.

My favourite therapeutic styling brush...

The brush I currently use is by Goody. It is copper infused so it fights dandruff and scalp bacteria. Although I don't have dandruff, this is an overall great brush for the scalp. It detangles hair easily and reduces hair fall by a lot!

Lastly, my secret weapon...

The BB Crème innovation sparked a revolution in skin care, but hear this...
now hair care is going BB crazy! Pantene launched a new BB 10-in-one hair crème that has all sorts of benefits and is said to be a hair multitasking styling aid. Pantene isn't my favourite brand and I would not recommend their chemical laden shampoos and conditioners but this product is definitely my new favourite styling aid. The consistency is that of a thick creamy gel, but don't let this fool you. It will not weight your hair down! It literally melts into your hair while you're styling it. You're left with smooth, shiny, frizz free hair. Props to Pantene on this one!

Thanks for watching my lovelies!

Happy hair days :) - Alexis
