Cleopatra's Hair Secrets REVEALED!

Cleopatra's Secrets to Sexy Shiny Hair Revealed!

Hello hairoholics!

Cleopatra was known for her luxurious and sometimes rare beauty regimen. On my skinoholics blog, I discussed her exotic bathing routine and skin care routine that we westerners could adapt into our daily lives. Donkey milk and natron are two of many ingredients used by Cleopatra, both known to have miraculous beauty benefits. Nowadays donkey milk is substituted with dairy milk and natron is known as baking soda. As the second part to my Cleopatra project, I am going to discuss Cleopatra's hair secrets that have kept her long black hair sleek and shiny. Please note that there are only a few hair recipes from Cleopatra known to us today, most of them were lost to the ages. Regardless, these recipes are proven to improve the health of your hair and these traditions have been treasured by many. Read on for more info.

Cleopatra's Deep Conditioning Hair Treatments

Deep conditioning treatments pamper dry lackluster hair. In this time and age, there are many store prepared deep conditioning treatments available in many formulas. However, natural is the best way to go. Natural deep conditioning treatments can be made with simple ingredients such as milk and pure honey, at a fraction of the cost of expensive treatments. Below I have listed a few of Cleopatra's favourite pampering treatments for her locks.

Nourishing Hot Oil Treatment

Hot oil treatments are my absolute favourite hair treatments. Cleopatra was also a fan of these hot oil treatments and did them regularly. Her main oil was olive oil, or otherwise known as "the Golden Oil of Egypt". Olive oil is known to be very healthy in general, and the natural fats and omegas in the oil make it great for cooking. On hair however, olive oil penetrates the hair follicles and coats them at the same time. Hair is shinier and softer over time. As a bonus, apply a hot towel for maximum oil absorption.

Take half a cup of olive oil and apply it from roots to ends, comb through. Cover head with a hot towel for 15 minutes, leave the oil on for a full night and wash out.

Clarifying & Moisturizing Vinegar Rinse

Vinegar is known to make hair shinier by smoothing down the cuticle. For best results use apple cider vinegar.

Take 1-2 cups of vinegar and add 5tbsp of apple cider vinegar into each cup. Rinse after shampooing, leave in for a minute, rinse with water and follow up with conditioner.

Nourishing Honey & Yoghurt Mask

This is probably one of Cleopatra's favorite hair masks.Yoghurt is very moisturizing and has probiotics and honey is a natural humectant which means that it will draw moisture into your hair follicles.

Take approximately half a cup of yogurt and mix 2 tbsp. of natural honey into the yogurt. Apply from roots to ends and cover with a shower cap. Leave in for 1-2 hours and wash and condition as usual.

Bonus! Cleopatra's Shampoo Recipe for Strong Hair

As a bonus to this post, I decided to share with you the super easy recipe that Cleopatra used to wash her hair with. This shampoo recipe will make your hair strong and prevent breakage overtime.

Cleopatra's Shampoo for Strength

Cleopatra's hair was said to be a gift from the gods. The soft, shiny strands that cascaded passed her shoulders made all women envious. Cleopatra gave credit to her cleansing and moisturizing routine which was actually rather simple.

Take 1-2 cups of purified water (NO TAP WATER!), and crack one egg into the water, proceed by adding 2 tbsp. of lemon juice. Whisk the mixture and apple it to your hair, massage and rinse. For optimum results, use the vinegar rinse after shampooing and then follow up with the yoghurt mask.

Shampoo & Conditioner Additives for Softer & Shinier Hair? Yes!

Shampoo Can Soften Hair! Conditioner Can Make Hair Shinier!

Hey hairoholics,

Sorry if I haven't been posting lately, school has just started for me and my first exams are in one month so I need to get back to work! Today I share two recipes that are meant to be used with shampoo and conditioner to make your hair softer and shinier. Let's get started!

All opinions are my own. I was not paid to rave about any products and I never am.  :)

Softer Hair With This Shampoo Additive!

Orgnx Coconut & Macadamia Oil Shampoo is always in my shower because I find that when I use it with my special ingredient it softens my hair very well. The trick for softer hair is to minimize damage, chemicals, heat and sulphates while maximizing natural oils and moisturizers. The recipe below is the one I mix in with my shampoo to make my hair softer. You may use this recipe with your current shampoo as well, but I find that it works extra well with this particular organic shampoo.

Shampoo Additive for Softer Hair!

2-4 tbsp. of almond or argan oil
mixed in with 4 tbsp. of Orgnx Coconut & Macadamia Oil Shampoo ( all depending on hair length)

Shampoo your hair as usual and rinse with lukewarm water.

Conditioner Additive for Shinier Hair!

Shiny hair is always a problem for people with colored/bleached hair. Most people want shiny hair, but their hair care habits are too rough. To get shiny hair we need to smoothen the hair cuticle so it reflects light. Rough brushing, sulphates in shampoos, heat tools for styling hair and frequent hair dyes or color treatments all make hair dull, dry and definitely not shiny! Taking proper care for your hair and using this conditioner additive may help you as it has helped me. For this recipe you need only two things, a conditioner (I obviously like and recommend this one) Orgnx Coconut & Macadamia Oil Conditioner, and olive oil. Olive oil is a natural moisturizer and repairing oil, careful not to use too much though because your hair can get greasy!

Shiny Hair Conditioner Additive Recipe!

2-3 tbsp. of olive oil
mixed in with 4 tbsp. of Orgnx Coconut & Macadamia Oil Conditioner (all depending on hair length)

After conditioning, rinse your hair with cold water to seal your hair cuticle and add extra shine. You may also wish to rinse your hair with some old beer (yes it adds shine!) or some apple cider vinegar for extreme shine, although this is optional.

Thanks for your views! I hope I am helping someone out there.  Please leave a comment. I will have a skinoholics post up soon but for now I am quite busy.

My Updated Hair Routine

Softer, Shinier Hair w/ 3 Essential Products!

Hello hairoholics,

I know I haven't been posting lately and I apologize to all of my readers. I will have a skin post up very soon as well. Anyways, here is my long overdue hair routine. My techniques have all remained the same, I do not brush my wet hair (I use a wide toothed comb) or take any prenatal pills because I believe pills do not increase your hair growth. Caring for my hair is rather hard at times because my hair is somewhat damaged from my highlighting jobs. Now I must wait at least a year before I do any highlights or root touch-ups so that my hair grows out a bit and regains it's strength and natural sheen.

My shampoo is from the Organix brand which I've found works best on my specific hair texture. Since moisture is the biggest factor for my hair of late, I have been using their Argan Crème line. It manages to leave my hair shinier and softer without excess weight. The smell is FANTASTIC as well!

Organix luxurious Moroccan argan crème extra moisturizing shampoo  ($6.99-$8.99 CA)

Conditioner is a must for me. I never skip conditioner. Never ever. Bringing moisture back into my hair is my primary concern as mentioned before. Keep in mind that a conditioner can never repair your hair, no matter what the bottle promises, but it does deposit a good amount of moisture and shine. My conditioner is compatible with my shampoo and smells fantastic. My hair has never looked better than it does when I use this conditioner.

Organic luxurious Moroccan argan crème extra moisturizing conditioner ($6.99-$8.99 CA)

Usually for treatments I stick to my argan oil or almond oil, but the oiling is a different type of treatment. A special rinse out mask is a staple in my routine, and surprisingly it is from L'Oreal.
The Ever Crème line from L'Oreal is sulphate free and contains Omega 3's and 6's. It also has Camelina extract for optimum moisture. I find that this mask makes my hair look great. The way I use it is simple, after shampooing and conditioning I take around 2-3 tbsp. since my hair is long, and I massage it into my scalp and smooth it down the length of my hair. I gently comb through my hair with a wide toothed comb to distribute the mask down to the ends. Then I twist my hair into a low bun and wait for 7-10 minutes for super shiny and soft hair. During this time you can shave or do whatever in the shower while the steam from the shower helps the mask penetrate into each individual hair strand.

L'Oreal EverCrème Sulfate-Free Moisture System Deep Nourishing Masque ($6.99 CA)

Thanks so much for viewing my blog and taking time to read my posts, it means a lot to me! If you could share my blog with others and spread the word, I would really appreciate it. Remember to leave a comment below if you have any questions or compliments!

Mommy Tips: Baby Healthy Hair Care

Taking Care of Baby's Delicate Hair, Naturally!

Hello hairoholics!

Today I am discussing how to properly care for a baby's hair. I am super excited to share my knowledge on this particular subject because of all the research I have done and tips I have learned. If you want to give your baby soft, shiny, beautiful hair in 3 easy steps continue...

*All tips and opinions are my own, I am not affiliated with any brand nor have I been paid by Live Clean. *

Baby Shampoo, Conditioner, Detangler & Oil

(Basic Hair Care for All Ethnicities & Hair Types)

Shampooing a baby's hair should be done with gentle care, and keep in mind that it shouldn't be done frequently since a baby's scalp is sensitive and can be dried out if the natural oils are constantly being washed out with shampoo. Conditioner is the second step and should be applied to the scalp and massaged in followed by a rinse with warm water. Detangler is optional. I know people that constantly battle with their baby's hair because it is growing fast and getting tangled. Detangler is more for long hair. Oil however should be used on a baby's scalp weekly. Be sure to check your baby for allergies before trying any oil. Doing a patch test is appropriate. If your baby responds well to a specific oil like organic coconut oil, massage their scalp with it about twice a week. Their hair should be very soft after their usual bath.

You may also wish to massage their bodies with oil, but that is a whole other subject I will be covering on my other blog later on

Live Clean & Other Organic Products---> Natural & Effective

I am a fan of live clean products. Their shampoos are the bomb, and their masks are fantastic. Recently, though, I have come across some great baby products from them and I am amazed. The gently baby wash and shampoo is fantastic and organic at the same time. Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo does not compare not even by an inch! Their products are laden with harmful chemicals, but live clean is naturally effective without the use of harsh chemicals.  Nature's Baby Organics is also a great baby brand and worth every penny.

Here are some baby hair staples that every mommy should own.

Live Clean (baby) Tearless Shampoo & Wash  $8.99 CA
A gentle wash suited for all hair and skin types. BONUS: it's tearless!

Nature's Baby Organics Conditioner & Detangler  $9.99-12.99 CA
A great detangler and conditioner that is available in two sweet scents (Vanilla Tangerine & Lavender Chamomile) perfect for your little one.

Conditioner & Detangler Vanilla Tangerine

Almond Oil $5.99-10.99 CA
A staple for any child, baby and adult! Moisturizes without  excess weight. Use once a week for massage and oiling to help your child grow and develop with maximum health in mind.

Safety First Brush & Comb Set  $6.99 - 7.99 CA
Baby's need safe and gentle hair tools that won't irritate the scalp or damage the hair. Safety First is a great line for baby comb's and brushes. This set is particularly gentle on baby's hair and scalp.

Accessories for Babies:

Boys and girls alike can have accessories to accentuate their look. Girl can have gentle barettes or clips (no tight metal clasps) or headbands. Bows are the easiest to obtain and gentlest on baby hair. For boys you can have baby caps or hats.

Baby Bow Head Wraps (exclusive)

Baby Headband Head Wrap

2 Day Organic Hair Detox Challenge! Prepare a Detox Cream for Shinier, Stronger Hair

2 Day Organic Hair Detox Cream for all Ethnicities and Hair Types

Hello hairoholics!

Today I bring you a super easy challenge that will transform your hair in just 2 days. The detox cream is suitable for all hair types even mixed ladies, it is also all organic and the ingredients are easy to find in your health food or whole foods market. Make sure that you start the detox when you know that you will be free to walk around with masked hair (on a Friday for example) and since it is for 2 days you won't be able to go anywhere, but all in the name of healthier hair! This whipped cream will make your hair extremely soft, shiny, and strong in 3 easy steps.

Step 1 will help you prepare your hair, Step 2 will help you prepare and store the detox for further use, Step 3 will ensure that your scalp properly detoxes and your hair receives all of the benefits.

STEP 1: Preparing your hair for the detox:

* Make sure to shampoo your hair with a deep clarifying shampoo (your hair will be dry but do not worry, your scalp is cleansed and ready).

* Comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb when it is damp

* Do not apply any hair serums/oils/leave in conditioners/ or styling products

* Let your hair air-dry after combing it.

STEP 2: The detox preparation:

Ingredients for the Detox Cream:

3 tbsp. of shea butter
 2 tbsp. of coconut oil
2 tbsp. of almond oil
1 tbsp. olive oil
Half a dropper ( or approximately half a tbsp.) of argan oil

*Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl and use an electrical mixer on HIGH for 10 minutes then it is complete. Store your detox in a jar or a plastic container if you want to use it again, make sure to refrigerate it so it doesn't spoil earlier than it is supposed to. The detox will spoil after  approximately one week so make sure to use it.*

STEP 3: Applying the Detox Cream & leaving it in:

* Comb your hair once more. Get all the tangled and mattes out.

* Apply the cream onto your hair and scalp, massage as you go.

* After your hair is all "creamed" twist your hair into a high bun.

* Place a hot towel around your hair for 15 minutes (you will repeat this for each day)

* To ensure your pillow case does not get oily, place a large puffy towel over it.

After you complete the 2 day detox, wash your hair out with a mild shampoo and follow up with a deep conditioner (leave it in for a minimum of 5 minutes). Comb your hair with a wide toothed comb and style/care for as usual.

Please leave a comment below and tell me how everything turned out for you. Is your hair in better condition? Is it stronger and more resilient? If you haven't tried the detox I would strongly recommend you to give it a shot, you have nothing to lose.

My Recipes For Healthier, Stronger Hair!

Recipes To Get Healthier/Stronger Hair...

Hey hairoholics!

Too much hair in the drain/on your brush? Ever wonder why you cannot grow longer healthier hair? The main reason is breakage. To prevent breakage we must limit the use of hot tools/styling-aids and brushing. We can also make our hair stronger using homemade recipes that are natural and nourishing for our hair. In the recipes below I used only 3 ingredients that are relatively cheap and can be bought at any health foods or whole foods market. I created these recipes to improve my hair condition and so far it is a super success! I hope they help you with your hair woes too :)

* All of the ingredients that I have purchased are from the NOW brand because they are 100% organic and relatively cheap compared to their "big brand" competitors *

Repairing Hair Mask For Damaged/Brittle Hair:

For this mask you need only two key ingredients. Shea butter and almond oil. Shea butter is very repairing for both skin/hair. In this mask it will make your hair more elastic and "pliable". Almond oil on the other hand is very moisturizing and full of healthy fats that will nourish hair from the inside out.

What To Do:

Melt 2-3 tbsp. of shea butter with 3-4 tbsp. of almond oil (all depending on the length of your hair) in a small bowl in the microwave. Apply the mask onto your hair. It doesn't matter whether your hair is wet or dry you still get the benefits of the mask. Leave the mask in for 2 hours - 1 full night. Wash your hair out with a mild shampoo and don't forget to condition your hair.

Hot Oil Treatment For Smoother/Healthier Hair & Scalp:

In this recipe you only need two oils, argan oil and almond oil. Argan oil from Morocco is a lighter oil that penetrates into the hair cuticle better than grape seed or avocado oil because it contains more fatty acids. Almond oil is also a great hot oil because it nourishes hair roots and helps soften your hair.

What To Do:

Heat 3-4 tbsp. of argan and almond oil in a small bowl in the microwave. After, dip your fingers into the oil and thoroughly massage your scalp. "Move" your scalp and gently tug on your hair to stimulate blood flow to your scalp. Comb through your hair and leave the oil in overnight for a whole heap of hair benefits. Wash out the next day with a mild shampoo and conditioner.

Ingredients Mentioned: (Pictured Below) Prices May Vary!

Now Sweet Almond Oil ($12.99 CA)

 Now Shea Butter ($6.99 CA)
 Now Argan Oil ($20.99 CA)

Thanks so much for supporting my blog! I would love to hear from you, leave a comment below.

My Updated Hair Care Routine!

Updated Hair Care Routine + Tips

Today I wanted to share my updated hair care routine with all of you. I apologize for not posting for such a long time, I will make up for it with some new hair recipes soon!

Keep reading for a great list of products I use + tips and tricks that have helped me.

Shampoo & Conditioner:

As most of my readers know by now, I have dry highlighted hair. Because of this I need specific hair care products to help me relieve my hair of it's brittleness and dryness. Yesterday I went to Costco and found two 1 litre bottles of probably the best shampoo/conditioner for dry hair ever! It was a deal (only $15.99 for both). I highly recommend these if you have chemically treated hair like me or if you just want suppler hair.

Tip: Don't wash your hair everyday. Wash it every-other-day (unless you sweat from sports or exercise and feel grimy).

LaCoupe Orgnx Coconut & Macadamia Oil Shampoo/Conditioner (1 litre Shampoo + 1 litre Conditioner 15.99 CA)

(Note: The bottles shown below are not the 1 litre ones that I purchased. These are the standard size and sold separately at  $9.99-$12.99 CA. )

Treatments & Tools:

In my hair care routine, I have a few products that I cannot live without that fall under the treatments category. One of them is the Organix Keratin Oil mask. This mask literally saved my hair when it was falling out in stringy clumps. I will show the mask below and talk about it some more.

Organix anti-breakage keratin oil Miraculous Recovery mask

($10.99 CA)

Well first of all the scent is flowery and the packaging is lovely, this first attracted me to the product. The packaging also listed many claims about the product, all of them are true. The mask contains keratin oil which helps revitalize your hair and restore elasticity + create a luminescent shine.  I have been an avid fan of this mask ever since my hair started falling out. I would strongly recommend it.

Tip: Mask your hair with a good quality protein/keratin mask once or twice a week for less damaged hair.

100% Pure Morrocan Argan Oil

Argan oil is also a staple in my hair routine. I use it to lightly moisturize the ends of my hair whenever they feel crispy or rough. Since this oil is expensive, I try not to pour the entire bottle onto my head at once. My advice is; Less is more! Use only a little bit of the oil, it goes a long way!

Tip: Put one spray or 2 drops of Argan Oil onto your palms and warm before distributing the oil onto the ends of your hair. Brush it out with a natural bristle brush for incredible shine and softness.

DO NOT BE FOOLED! Some brands have Argan Oil treatments that are laden with chemicals and silicones. Argan Oil is hardly present in its natural form in those products or it's at the end of the ingredients list. Always buy pure Morrocan Argan Oil. I get mine from Ebay (2 for 1 deals are popular there).

A picture example of what pure Argan Oil may look like.

(Ranging from $14.99-40.00 CA)

Wide Toothed Comb

A pretty basic hair necessity. Used to comb wet hair and get knots out of dry hair.

Tip: Never brush wet hair! Use a wide toothed comb to prevent breakage.

Goody Stylista Wide Toothed Combs ($2.99-$4.99 each CA)
